Luddington, Michigan Visit

Debbie and I went on a little vacation to Michigan and visited some interesting places, one being Luddington.

Luddington is port for the last coal-fired steamship the SS Badger, a ship originally designed to carry rail cars, converted to carry passengers and vehicles across Lake Michigan.

SS Badger in Port

The ship travels across and back everyday, and it was cool watching and photographing the entry into port late in the day.

I set up 2 cameras, with different focal lengths to capture the incoming ship. As the ship moved out of one camera view, I would reposition it in the next spot I wanted to capture.

I did this a few times in order to capture enough footage for a nice timelapse.

There was a big crowd gatheres around me. Apparently watching this thing come in is a thing people look forward to in the late afternoon.

Next I wandered around the dock area where several old propellers from the ship were laid out in a kind of display.

The props for this ship are huge, and several show signs of wear and cavitation.

The nearby park included a dock for a large Coast Guard ship, and a number of displays and statues describing the history of the area.

Another interesting site was the Port of Luddington Maritime Museum. I didn’t get a chance to tour inside but the exterior and dock was interesting, and the museum looks awesome at sunset.

We spent several days in Luddington, and we really enjoyed the beautiful coastline and harbor area.

Thanks for visiting and make sure to check out the Badger timelapse on my YouTube channel.

Thank you for visiting!
