Fairport Harbor Sunset & Seagulls

Crazy windy, choppy surf, and seagulls celebrating.

I recently got out to Fairport Harbor, looking to photograph the lighthouse around sunset. I was shocked by how windy it was, and the water in the harbor was super choppy. It was so windy my camera on the tripod was vibrating too much to get a clear shot!

Since we had some nice warm days the ice covering the harbor had melted. There were hundreds of dead fish along the shore line and the seagulls were celebrating their good fortune. I set about trying to capture some shots of the melee.

I started walking along the beach, far enough from shore so as not to scare the gulls, but close enough for the Nikon Z100-400 to capture some good shots of the gulls.

It was so windy, they appeared to just float in the air over the water. There was squabbling, screaming and chasing while waves crashed and the wind howled.

I captured some cool photos and video clips while the sun was getting lower in the sky. This time of year the sun sets further south and not behind the lighthouse. I had to “settle” for some painterly sky behind the lighthouse.

All in all, a nice visit to the harbor. The cold temps and high winds meant that there weren’t a lot of people out there and I had the shore pretty much to myself. You can see some more action in the viseo below.
