Fresh Snow at Headlands State Park

Looking for a colorful sunrise but no luck!

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to get the camera out, so with the fresh snowfall, I decided to try my luck at Headlands Beach State Park for sunrise.

The weather report was for partly cloudy skies, so I was hopeful. I arrived during the blue hour and was greeted to really interesting, rich blue, night sky.

The color of the sky behind the trailhead sign was my first clue.

Walking down the trail, the boardwalk was really slippery!

The sky over the lake was an incredible blue. I love this view with the boardwalk leading you into the image.

I made my way over to the harbor side of the breakwall to view the lighthouse from that beach.

Continuing up the trail toward the lighthouse, I veered left to see what the main beach looked like.

The lake was frozen, and I couldn’t see water anywhere. There was a large accumulation of ice along the shoreline.

This beach is different every time I visit.

I hung out on the beach for a bit to see if I would get any sunrise color in the sky. The gray clouds were laughing at me, so I backtracked and headed for a close up of the lighthouse.

Along the trail I noticed the ice in the bay had been pushed, broken, and refrozen.

It was crazy and chaotic, so I grabbed a few shots.

The bay was completely frozen and the ice closer to the lighthouse was all smashed and refrozen. The ice further in was smooth and covered with fresh snow.

I continued on to the the lighthouse and took a few photos from different angles.

It really was a cold, gray day.

Now it was getting late and I wanted to check out the new eagle nest near the parking lot at Headlands.

I was not disappointed as there was an eagle sitting in the nest.

He/she didn’t stay long…

With that, I headed home.

Since I live close to Mentor Lagoons, I decided to see what kind of critters I might find out there this morning.

Apparently, today was a good day for all the canada geese to hang out at the marsh. There was a huge group.

Here are a few shots of these guys…

So, despite not getting the color in the sky I wanted, there are always opportunities for nice photos, so get yourselves out to Headlands Beach State Park, and Mentor Marsh.

Take care friends!
